Are Psychics real? This topic has been debated for countless years with no clear answer on either side. Having my own psychic experiences, I would say, yes, psychics are real depending on the psychics you meet. They each have different gifts and go about using them in different ways. This may be difficult to believe, but from both sides of my family, psychic ability runs in my blood. My father has been able to read dreams and send up prayers that have the ability to come true. My mother tells me of my ancestors who had certain powers they could only pass on through word of mouth to those who were worthy (That power, however, was forever kept secret as my great grandparents passed away.) I believe I experience dejavu often and sometimes have this sense of knowing that can prove to be fruitful to me at times. (Perhaps I will make a video about this on my Youtube channel at some point if requested.)
The point is psychic ability is popular throughout many cultures (my mother Dominican, my father Puerto Rican) while having no ties to each other. That’s why I enjoy the ones that often appear in The Legend of Zelda. In many of the games we see the classic fortuneteller with a crystal ball in their lap, but there are also those who are able to see visions and foretell what is to come.
The first set of psychics I’ve encountered in The Legend of Zelda are Link, Zelda, and the Greak Deku Tree themselves. In the intro of Ocarina of Time, Link has nightmares of meeting Ganon and his role in Hyrule. He saw visions of Zelda riding away with Impa before meeting the Dark King himself.
Thy slumber these past moons must have been restless, and full of nightmares… a vile climate pervades the land and causes nightmares to those sensitive to it…- Great Deku Tree
Zelda was very much the same.
Hey, have you heard that Princess Zelda sees prophetic visions in her dreams?- Hyrule Town Citizen
Rumors spread around Castle Town about Princess Zelda’s visions and once we meet her she tells us of the dream she’s had.
I had a dream… In the dream, dark storm clouds were billowing over the land of Hyrule… But suddenly, a ray of light shot out of the forest, parted the clouds and lit up the ground… The light turned into a figure holding a green and shining stone, followed by a fairy… I know this is a prophecy that someone would come from the forest.- Princess Zelda
No one but Impa believes what she has foretold and when Link comes bearing a striking resemblance to her dream, that is when his quest truly started.
Zelda wasn’t the first gifted being we met after Link, however. The Great Deku Tree was able to sense something foreboding as his fate was tied to the Hero of Time.
Dost thou sense it? The climate of evil descending upon this realm…- Great Deku Tree
The Great Deku Tree was able to feel that something was about to go terribly wrong. He knew it had to do with that evil man who cursed him, but he had not known when it would begin until he felt the “climate of evil”.
Ocarina of Time is not the only game that gifted characters appear in. The first one to ever exist, so far on the Hyrule Historia’s Timeline, was Skyward Sword’s Sparrot.
Oh yes, these lovely, round eyes can even see… into the future! Allow me to tell your fortune, boy!- Sparrot
He is known for being the man with big, sparkling, blue eyes. He is incredibly different from the other Fortune Tellers we know. He uses a Crystal Ball to see into the future and without it he has no power.
I wouldn’t assume that he has any relation to the other fortunetellers of future games. Though he exists, he bares no resemblance to the others and his power does not come for him naturally.
The next fortuneteller is Fanadi from Twilight Princess. What sets her apart from Sparrot is that on her forehead she bears a Sheikah symbol and she also has red eyes. Perhaps she studied the Sheikan arts or she is of the bloodline? Either way, though she also has a crystal ball, I do not believe she needs it and uses it for show. Her pointed ears remind me much of the Hylians in Ocarina of Time. Perhaps she uses those ears to listen to the Goddesses.
They say we Hylians have big ears in order to hear the voices of the gods…but I’ve never heard them! –Hyrule Citizen.
Fortune Tellers and Psychics have even appeared in the handheld Legend of Zelda games. In Link’s Awakening, Grandpa Ulrira helps Link with his quest every time he is called on the phone. (Does this sound familiar? Katrina from Animal Crossing perhaps?) Though it is never suggested that he is gifted, it is very strange that he knows all the information to help Link just as Sparrot and Fanadi do.
A Link to the Past, Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, and A Link Between Worlds all also have their own ties with fortunetellers. Most of them are there to help Link advance in his quest if he becomes stuck. The fortuneteller of Four Swords Adventures, however, gambles with Link for Force Gems and otherwise has no other significant purpose.
Nintendo seems to enjoy making fortunetelling characters seeing as two of their most popular games, Zelda and Animal Crossing, feature them.

I don’t know enough about Japan to comment on what their take on fortunetellers is, but from what I have seen from Nintendo, though these people can be strange, they are, more often than not, completely trustworthy.
What do you think about Psychics? Would you ever have your fortune read? Would you like to see more fortunetellers in future Zelda games (maybe Breath of the Wild)? Let me know in the comments below!
